History
The original Woodward's Building was a historic building in the Gastown/Downtown East side of Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. The original portion of the building was constructed in 1903 for the Woodward's Department Store when that area of Cordova Street was the heart of Vancouver's retail shopping district. At one time this was the premiere shopping destination in Vancouver. Woodward's was famous for its Christmas window displays, its basement Food Floor, and the "W" sign at the top of the building which was a distinctive landmark on the Vancouver skyline.
 
The Iconic 'W'
The Woodward's 'W' sign has been a fixture in the Vancouver skyline for close to 90 years. During that time there have been 3 different signs, each with a unique story behind it.

  • In 1927, Woodward's erected a 75-foot-high beacon modelled after the Eiffel Tower to act as a giant billboard advertisement for the department store. The tower held a searchlight that beamed two million candlepower and revolved six times a minute. It could be seen from as far away as Vancouver Island, Abbotsford, and Mission but was shut down at the beginning of World War II because of its potential use as a landmark for aerial attacks.

  • In 1944 the landmark 16-foot neon "W" was installed on the top of the building on a 25 metre replica of the Eiffel Tower, replacing a pre-war searchlight-beacon which had until then been the building's hallmark.

The W

  • The "W" neon sign, which topped the building on the Eiffel Tower replica, was removed before the demolition and was replicated and re-installed on January 9, 2010, now boasting energy-saving LED lights.

Woodward's Building Trivia
  • The Woodward's building opened in Vancouver on Main Street in 1891. In 1903 it moved and expanded to Hastings & Abbott.

  • Known at the time for it's famous "Food Floor" in the basement, it was the first self-serve food department on the continent.

  • On December 8, 2009, the Woodward's Food Floor reopened for the first time since the chain's sale to Safeway. The new Woodward's Food Floor, which is located at the former Woodward's complex (along with a new location of London Drugs), is now a division of Nester's Market

  • It was the first major department store in BC to open for business on Sundays.
  • Woodward's was famous for their window displays.

  • On the morning of September 30, 2006 all but the oldest original portion (1903-08 building) of the Woodward's structure was demolished with a "roll-over" implosion by Pacific Blasting which signaled the beginning of the construction of the new complex of buildings.
